Alkimos College is seeking to appoint a dedicated, highly competent and enthusiastic Arts teacher – Media/Music/Drama/or Dance. The successful applicant will be an expert, passionate teacher of the Arts, with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. Alkimos College opened in 2020 with 176 Year 7 students and will add an additional cohort in 2021 so that we will have Year 7 and 8 and by 2025 will have the full complement of Year 7-12. The successful applicant will therefore demonstrate the professional knowledge, understanding and experience to deliver an engaging and relevant secondary Arts curriculum, from the early and middle adolescent phases of learning through to senior secondary courses. They will be enthusiastic adopters of a college wide instructional framework based on explicit teaching and instructional skills, strategies and tactics. The successful applicant will be committed to personal and professional growth and will embrace opportunities for collaboration within the college.
Successful applicants will demonstrate the ability to develop innovative classroom practices and utilise IT to provide integrated, personalised and authentic learning experiences for students. A key attribute is the ability to create environments conducive to learning and provide educational opportunities that are fun, purposeful, relevant and cater for differing student learning needs. Commitment to the college health and well-being program (Anchor) and extra-curricular activities (Academies) will be highly desirable, as well as active promotion of the college motto, values and vision within the college and wider community.
Please note this role will entail teach Performing Arts and Media. The ability to teach Drama, Music, and Dance is advantageous, as is Media. Flexibility will be required in the first couple of years with the successful applicant required to teach 2-3 Arts areas, plus may be required to teach a Mathematics, English, Humanities and Social Sciences, or Sciences (MESH) subject. Our specialist arts facilities will not be built until 2023 (in preparation for senior school), but we do have existing facilities in our Stage 1 build for Arts classes (including a Media lab).
Located in the northern suburb of Alkimos with sweeping ocean views, Alkimos College opened in 2020 with our foundation Year 7 cohort of 176 students, providing local intake area students with access to an exceptional secondary education in world-class learning facilities. Each year we will add an additional cohort, until we reach our full complement of Year 7 -12 in 2025.
Stage 1 buildings include administration, student services, library, gymnasium, staff fitness centre, food studios, cafeteria, technologies, general classrooms, specialist science laboratories, nature play area and the Specialised Autism Program classroom and Homeroom. Shared oval and community facilities with the City of Wanneroo will be available via the adjacent Halesworth Park precinct in 2021.
Stage 2 (due in 2023) will include a performing arts centre, dance studio, media studio, music studio, lecture theatre, additional student services and general classrooms.
The college places a high priority on professional learning, with a focus on a whole of college instructional framework as part of our ‘Alkimos Approach.’ A commitment to self-reflection and growth is vital. The college uses a coaching framework for all planning, review, performance development and classroom observation and feedback.
Staff are expected to embrace technology and innovation and enhance their skills with technology to improve work practices. Teaching staff are provided with a college iPad for use. The college has a current device ratio of 2:1 for students with a range of devices available to suit the learning required. This includes Surface Go laptops, iPads, Macs, PCs.
Alkimos College has high expectations of the student cohort to ensure all students are well prepared for their future, and have the opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to achieve their potential. This is complemented by a strong focus on student engagement and mental health and wellbeing.
Alkimos College is only one of eight secondary schools chosen to have a Specialised Autism Learning Program. The college also has an academic extension pathway and a bespoke, explicitly taught wellbeing program.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
