Willetton Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2020 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2021. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2020 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2021.

Willetton SHS is one of the largest schools in Western Australia, drawing its student enrolment from diverse geographic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. With a student population in excess of 2550 and approximately 200 teaching staff and 110 support staff on campus, it is the school of choice for many local and international families. The school successfully caters for the academic, social and emotional development of students with diverse educational needs including those with an EALD background, special needs and gifted and talented students. The school is committed to the intellectual, creative and social development of the students by the provision of stimulating, relevant programs and orderly teaching and classroom practices. As an Education Assistant – Special Needs you will work with students with various educational needs due to disability, learning and social difficulties, as well as assisting in the differentiation and delivery of planned educational programs. The successful applicants will have demonstrated strong professional knowledge and proven experience of working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), sensory needs and those requiring mental health support, amongst other special needs.

Suitable applicants will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to seamlessly integrate and collaborate with an effective and established team of staff. To be successful in this role you will be organised and able to take initiative in order to support students with diverse learning challenges, assist staff in curriculum delivery, as well as assisting with pastoral care of students.  This role involves working closely with students, staff and parents to provide the best educational outcomes for students with educational needs. This may include attendance at Case Conferences, assisting with the development and implementation of Individualised Education Plans, recognising and maintaining own Professional Learning needs and contributing positively to the school community.

Suitable applicants will be prepared to assist and support students in secondary classes, as such having a level of competency in all areas including English, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), Languages, Mathematics, Science, Vocational Education and Training (VET) and Physical and Health Education. The ability to support the practical aspects of The Arts and Design and Technology will be highly regarded.

Suitable applicants will demonstrate experience in the development and delivery of supported educational programs, ASDAN, and working with students from diverse backgrounds. Strong behaviour management skills are highly desirable. As part of the Learning and Curriculum Support team, applicants will be committed to the intellectual, creative, physical and social growth of our students and respect them as individuals with different histories, needs, interests, abilities and aptitudes. Our support staff provide a distinctive, comprehensive education assisted by effective pastoral care approaches.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
