Christmas Island District High School (DHS) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated Humanities and Social Science (HASS) teachers for appointments to fixed term, full-time vacancies which may arise during the 2020 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2021. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2020 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2021.
Suitable applicants will be required to deliver one or more of our Year 11 and 12 ATAR courses as well as a combination of lower secondary 7-10 HASS. The courses delivered face to face in Year 11 and 12 vary depending on individual cohorts and student selections and could include ATAR Modern History or ATAR Geography.
Suitable applicants will be relationship focused and able to exhibit strong interpersonal skills while working collaboratively in a team environment. Experience or capacity to differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of students with a range of achievement levels, language backgrounds and disabilities will be highly regarded. Suitable applicants will have a passion for secondary education and the desire to impart their skills and knowledge with others.
We are looking for applicants that have an excellent capacity to communicate clearly and concisely with staff, students and the community and be able to articulate a clear vision that complements and supports the school’s excellent culture in teaching and learning. You will have ideally demonstrated successes when teaching students in this learning area, as well as the capacity to improve your own performance though reflection. Knowledge of the curriculum area, ability to work in a team environment and a willingness to be part of a strong and supportive pastoral care system that runs through the school is highly valued.
As an Apple Mac school, applicants should be willing to incorporate Information Technology into their teaching. The School has a strong focus on Kagan Co-operative Learning Strategies across all learning areas. EAL qualifications and/or experience, although not a requirement, are viewed as highly desirable for all positions at the School.
Christmas Island DHS is located approximately 360km southwest of Java and 2300km northwest of Perth, Western Australia. The island is believed to be the remnant of an extinct submarine volcano. Christmas Island's (CI) climate is tropical, with little seasonal variation in temperature. The island experiences a distinct tropical rainfall pattern with a market wet season occurring from approximately January to May with a dry season between August and October.
The Indian Ocean Territories Schools are able to provide an exciting and unique teaching experience, unlike anywhere else in Australia. By agreement, these two Commonwealth schools are administered by the Western Australian Department of Education. Where possible, employment conditions mirror Western Australian mainland schools. Teachers can be appointed for a maximum three year fixed term contract on the islands. Department of Education permanent teachers are able to maintain attachment to their substantive school, subject to line management approval.
