Gwoonwardu Mia was established to be a common meeting place for the five language groups of the Gascoyne Region, celebrate Aboriginal culture, be a significant tourism attraction and provide quality employment opportunities for Aboriginal people. After an extended period of closure, from the 15 July 2019, the Western Australian Museum has undertaken to manage Gwoonwardu Mia and reopen the Cultural Centre.
The Western Australian Museum will work collaboratively with Aboriginal communities in the Gascoyne to achieve a financially and culturally sustainable Cultural Centre which maximises its business potential and is also the recipient of ongoing state support.

This position is located in Carnarvon which lies at the mouth of the Gascoyne River on the Indian Ocean between Shark Bay and Ningaloo Reef, approximately 900 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia. Carnarvon is a service town with links to other towns in the Gascoyne Region.
The Regional Manager Business and Strategy provides leadership of the team at Gwoonwardu Mia. Responsible for the delivery of cultural services including public exhibitions, events and activities for users from within the region and beyond; it focuses on strategies and initiatives which highlight, promote and recognise the Aboriginal culture and heritage of the Gascoyne region.
This role requires an individual with extensive experience working with Aboriginal communities, strong business management and financial skills, as well as a strategic approach to business development. The ability to establish an environment that fosters community unity, partnerships and networks is essential.
The successful applicant will have the skills to ensure financial accountability to all funding sources and to promote and facilitate all values that underpin the centre’s vision, including economic wellbeing, social inclusion and connection to people and communities.
This is a full time, fixed term vacancy, for a period of 24 months, with a possibility of extension. There will also be a Pool running for a period of 24 months from the initial appointment. Applicants deemed suitable will be placed into a pool where appointments may be considered for similar vacancies for full-time, part-time, fixed term or permanency.
