Cocos Islands District High School (DHS) is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Deputy Principal to join its dedicated team of teaching and administrative staff. This position primarily deals with management of the West Island Campus, a K-10 environment, with a strong emphasis on teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to be successful in this role. As the high school component of the school is at West Island campus the successful applicant will need to provide strong leadership in the 7-10 environment. Experience in a district high primary setting would be desirable as the role includes operational management of a small, predominantly mainstream, primary cohort.
The successful applicant will provide educational leadership with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy development. The role also requires supporting the Principal with developing and implementing the school strategic plan. Taking an innovative approach to improving student outcomes is critical to being successful in the role.
It is desirable for applicants to have experience teaching English as an Additional Language and being familiar assessing with the EAL/D progress maps. In this role, the successful applicant will be committed to implementing whole school approaches and initiatives. They must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the effective use of explicit teaching strategies and be dedicated and committed to improving student learning through continual teacher improvement and accountability. Leaders, and aspirant leaders, who have experience in implementing the Sounds Write Program, Talk4Writing, Back to Front Maths, The Daily Five, Walker Learning and Kagan Cooperative Learning structures are encouraged to apply. The Dandelion Reading Series is used to support the teaching of Synthetic Phonics.
The Home Island School Campus context of the Cocos Islands District High School is within the broader Western Australian Education system. The Island faces educational challenges; however we have high expectations for all our students. Almost all of the resident population on Home Island are Cocos Malay, and they are EAL/D learners. Factors such as the remoteness of the community, the uniqueness of the first language/dialect spoken, culture and turnover of staff in the school necessitates whole school programs to be followed through succession planning.
Cocos Islands District High School Home Island Campus uses a multi-sensory, explicit teaching model. We follow the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline, version 8.1 as a guide for teachers. Students should be taught in accordance with their developmental skills, rather than strictly following these guidelines. Successful applicants will be offered professional learning opportunities prior to the start of the 2020 academic year.
The Cocos Islands DHS operates as a K-10 over two campuses. The school is committed to the ongoing health and wellbeing of all, whilst maintaining a vibrant, positive and flexible team focusing on the achievement of agreed outcomes.
Cocos Islands DHS is a Commonwealth School that is operated by agreement between the Commonwealth and State Governments. This agreement allows the Department of Education to deliver educational programs to students at Cocos Islands DHS in a manner that is similar to those delivered in comparable mainland Western Australian communities. The Cocos Islands are made up of 27 small islands that form a horseshoe shaped atoll around a central lagoon, which is 8 kilometres wide. The total area of these islands is 14 square kilometres, the majority of this is taken up by West Island and Home Island. These two islands house a population of approximately 550 adults and children, with the remaining islands being unpopulated. The population is made up of 90 mainland Australians that provide administration and other services to the Islands, with the remaining population being Australians of Cocos Malay descent living on Home Island.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.
