School of Special Education Needs: Medical and Mental Health (SSEN: MMH) is seeking an innovative and dedicated Principal to lead the team.
SSEN: MMH is part of the Student Support Services Directorate that provides educational support for students whose medical or mental health prevents them from successfully participating in their enrolled school programs. Support is available to both public and private school students, from kindergarten to Year 12, across Western Australia to facilitate their entry into or return to a program that best meets their ongoing needs.
While the leadership team is located at the Perth Children’s Hospital, the Principal, SSEN: MMH will oversee and coordinate 60 programs across 40 Department of Health settings to ensure the provision of quality educational services to students whose physical or mental health makes it difficult to access their educational program. The success of the service to students is dependent on the partnerships with agencies, in particular the Department of Health. Given this, exceptional interpersonal and written skills will be essential to the role.
The successful applicant will be responsible for using data and research to review the model of service to ensure contemporary practice is delivered and is aligned with the strategic direction of the Department of Education and complements the work of other SSEN. The Principal, in collaboration with the Managers and Principals of the Student Support Directorate will ensure services and support for students and schools are delivered in an efficient and effective manner and not in isolation.
We strive to deliver a relevant educational program to students in hospital or at home for medical reasons; and to collaborate with schools of long term and/or chronically ill students in devising and delivering an educational program in line with student need and home school curriculum.
As Principal you will ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students and encourage parents to be actively engaged in the education of their children. The role of the principal within the Department of Education is to ensure schools comply with all relevant legislation and reporting requirements and develops relationships with community organisations to the benefit of the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
