This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly effective and empowered individual to join our foundation leadership team, as Head of Learning Area (HOLA) Mathematics. This position provides a unique opportunity to build and develop a team from the ground up, and we are therefore seeking applicants ideally with demonstrated leadership success.
As HOLA you will build and develop the Mathematics learning area, developing a culture of high quality teaching and leadership. You will model innovative, solutions-focused and evidence based thinking. Working collaboratively with your team you will implement whole school policies, processes and procedures; embedding a culture of professional leadership, trust and ongoing improvement for all of our students and staff.
The successful applicant will be a dedicated, highly competent and enthusiastic HOLA of Mathematics, with excellent interpersonal skills to provide effective and distributed leadership within the learning area. You will be committed to promoting and fostering academic aspiration and engagement, in an environment where achievement is celebrated.
The HOLA Mathematics will need an excellent understanding of data analysis and skills in evidence based planning to improve student learning. They will need to have a commitment to improved results for all students, in a planned and strategic manner. He/she will utilise their high level data literacy skills and monitoring processes to support all students.
As an expert practitioner, you will have a commitment to excellence in teaching and engage in ongoing self-reflection. The ability to authentically evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practice and team performance is an important aspect of the role. Another key attribute is the ability to create environments conducive to learning and provide educational opportunities that are purposeful and relevant, catering for different student learning needs.
Flexibility within a new school and a commitment to coaching and mentoring others will be paramount. As HOLA you will have evidence of high standards of professionalism and will embrace opportunities for collaboration within the school community and across the Northern Beaches Education Network.
You will support the development of innovative classroom practices and provide leadership to staff, utilising the school’s cutting edge ICT infrastructure to provide authentic and relevant learning experiences for students. A commitment to the school well-being program and extra-curricular programs will be advantageous and as such the successful applicant will be student and relationship focused.
You may also be required to take on additional leadership portfolios as required; to suit the business needs of the school, and dependent on the skill set of the successful applicant.
The school may open as an Independent Public School, subject to appropriate community support and participation in development and transition programs.
About Us
Alkimos College in Alkimos will open for the start of the 2020 school year as a local intake secondary school. Initially the school will accommodate up to 250 Year 7 students in 2020 and grow to accommodate a total of 2000+ Year 7 to 12 students by 2025.
A strong vision and ethos will be focused on creating and maintaining a school culture of a ‘high performance and high care environment’ for students, staff and the community. With a clear focus on high expectations of the student cohort, the purpose is to ensure that all students are well prepared for their future and have opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to achieve their individual potential. This will be complemented by a strong focus on student engagement and mental health and well-being.
Alkimos College is one of only sixteen schools chosen to have a Specialised Autism Learning Program, with the program already in place at Alkimos Primary School, providing students with a seamless K-12 program, if required. There will also be an academic extension pathway and a whole school approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths (STEM) to provide ‘hands-on’ and ‘minds-on’ lessons for students.
A coaching paradigm will underpin all aspects of self-assessment, planning and review, performance development, classroom observation and feedback and be used with students as part of the well-being program. Experience in or a strong desire to engage in a coaching culture is highly desirable.
A partnership founded on strong relationships between students, staff, parents and the community will be the enduring platform upon which the school is built.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
