Geraldton Senior High School is seeking to appoint an Education Assistant – Mainstream to join their team.
As an Education Assistant – Mainstream and under teacher direction, you will be required to support the delivery of a planned program for small groups of students. A key part of the program will be to work in the area of student literacy skill development. The successful applicant will assist with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment and develop resources and other materials to be used to support the delivery of the program.
Geraldton Senior High School opened in 1939 and is an iconic part of Geraldton. Since this time it has been at the forefront of providing quality secondary education to students from across the Midwest and other parts of Australia.
Located next to the city centre in a parkland environment, the school is one of the architectural highlights of Geraldton. The school has catered for Year 10, 11 and 12 students for the past 20 years when it became a senior college however the school was renamed and rebadged in 2018 and has commenced its transition into becoming a mainstream secondary senior high school. In 2019, Year 7 students commenced at the school for the first time. It currently offers a diverse range of academic, vocational, social and service programs for around nine hundred students.
The total school staff is over one hundred and thirty with a significant number of teachers along with non-teaching staff and support staff. Geraldton is seen as a desirable teaching location and the staff is highly experienced and motivated.
Students attending the school come from Geraldton and surrounding towns and farming communities. The student population represents the multicultural nature of Geraldton with Aboriginal and Torres Strait students comprising 26% of the school population. Students are able to board at the Geraldton Residential College which is located close by. The school is served by an extensive local bus service.
While there is a strong emphasis on academic pathways, the school also features highly successful programs in vocational education along with workplace training, Aboriginal traineeships and TAFE linked courses.
Students are encouraged to participate in a range of state and national competitions in academic areas as well as music, drama, dance and sport.
The school is highly regarded within the Geraldton community. Meaningful relationships between teachers, students and families are considered vital to the ongoing success of Geraldton Senior High School.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Demonstrated sound oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with students, parents and teaching professionals.
- Demonstrated sound interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team.
- Demonstrated sound organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective educational programs to students.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
