This is a twenty-four (24) month fixed term, part-time (0.5FTE) position commencing Term 1, 2020
Esperance Education Support Centre (ESC) is looking for an effective communicator to join a supportive team that promotes positive relationships between students, staff, parents and the local community.
The successful applicant will be a highly visible and active leader who has a strong and flexible curriculum focus, providing leadership by embracing the "Classroom First" strategy. Leadership will be demonstrated in the context of a secondary Education Support setting encompassing Individual Education and Transition Planning, Individual Behaviour Management Planning, meeting the educational needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Augmentative Communication. Leadership in the education of students with disability will also be evident in the support and guidance provided to other schools and the community. You will possess effective communication skills and understand the importance of leading a multi-disciplinary workforce whilst meeting the needs of a diverse student population in an inclusive manner.
The successful applicant will lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in the school, through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and other stakeholders. The Principal will ensure compliance and accountability for the overall management and development of the school, within Government and Departmental policies and guidelines.
Esperance ESC is a secondary school catering for the individual learning needs of students with intellectual disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder with higher educational need. Our vision is ‘young people, empowered to make choices, participating in and contributing to their community’ and this vision is reflected across our school curriculum.
The curriculum is guided by the Individual Education Plans and Individual Transition Plans of our students. Our diverse and purposeful programs are referenced to formal curriculum and are complimented by community access, work experience, sporting, musical, horse therapy, independent living skills, social and emotional programs, camps and excursions.
As Principal you will ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students and encourage parents to be actively engaged in the education of their children. The role of the principal within the Department of Education is to ensure schools comply with all relevant legislation and reporting requirements and develops relationships with community organisations to the benefit of the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the three leadership requirements and five professional practices particular to the role of a principal identified by the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:

- Engaging and working with the community

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
