Burbridge School is looking for an effective communicator who understands the importance of leading a multi-disciplinary workforce whilst meeting the needs of a diverse student population in an inclusive manner. The successful applicant will foster a safe, purposeful and inclusive learning environment and have a proven ability to develop constructive and respectful relationships with staff, students, parents and other stakeholders, whilst simultaneously ensuring compliance and accountability for the overall management and development of the school within Government and Departmental policies and guidelines.
Burbridge School is a purpose-built Education Support School in Koondoola that currently caters for approximately 50 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. A high staff-to-student ratio provides students a degree of individual tuition, support and care. Qualified education assistants support learning in the classroom, and local community and ensure students receive appropriate care. On-site nurses provide support and care for any students with medical needs
Burbridge School takes pride in delivering a curriculum that is consistent with current best practice for students with special educational needs. Evidence-based programs ensure students learn and achieve to their full potential. The WA Curriculum provides the framework for learning but overarching all learning is the development of independence skills including mobility, independent living and self-care skills; the development of communication skills including through the use of augmentative and alternative communication; and the development of personal and social capability including positive behaviour and self-regulation, social skills, interpersonal relationships and protective behaviours.
The specialist facilities at Burbridge School include hydrotherapy and swimming pool, gymnasium, enterprise gardens, library, medical centre, kitchen, and a computer laboratory. A light and dark multi-sensory room provides an engaging and motivating learning environment for all students but particularly caters for students with sensory and vision needs. A dedicated life skills centre simulates the home environment and students learn the independent living skills to become self-confident and competent adults.

A positive behaviour support philosophy underpins all teaching allowing students to develop self-regulation skills and personal and social competence.
The Principal will support the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.
As Principal you will ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students and encourage parents to be actively engaged in the education of their children. The role of the principal within the Department of Education is to ensure schools comply with all relevant legislation and reporting requirements and develops relationships with community organisations to the benefit of the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
