Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School (RCS) has a challenging and rewarding role where you will use your strong interpersonal and leadership skills to achieve the school’s vision and goals to meet the needs of a diverse school community. Please note the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with the substantive Principal during Term 4 on a comprehensive handover.
The successful applicant will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a school culture that promotes positive relationships between students and between students and staff, and, engaging parents and the wider community in the educational work of the school. The Principal is responsible for being innovative and creative in the establishment of systems and structures to foster academic development and improvements in social and emotional development for students, as well as engaging a diverse school community in the educational programs of the school. They will possess a commitment to continuous school improvement and development of the instructional program, particularly the pedagogy of beginning teachers, and building networks with other agencies, other schools, and services in the community to benefit school programs.
Tjuntjuntjara RCS is located in the Tjuntjuntjara Community, home of the Spinifex people (Pila Nguru). The Tjuntjuntjara Community is in the Great Victoria Desert close to the border with South Australia, north of the Nullarbor Plain and 680 kilometres north-east of Kalgoorlie. It is considered to be one of the most remote communities in Australia. The community was established in 1985 when people moved from Coonana to Tjuntjuntjara to follow a traditional lifestyle and maintain cultural identity & values.
A school was established by the community in 1988 and, in 1998, it was annexed to Yintarri RCS in Coonana. At the beginning of 2008 Tjuntjuntjara RCS officially became a new school. The school works hard to foster an environment where we show leadership in supporting the community's goal of improving relevant and meaningful educational outcomes for the children of Tjuntjuntjara.
Currently Tjuntjuntjara has a population of approximately 80-150 residents, however this can swell or decline depending on Western Desert cultural cycles. It is generally a quiet place where people feel safe. The main language spoken in Tjuntjuntjara is Pitjantjatjarra followed by English.
Maintaining traditional culture whilst preparing their children for a rapidly changing world is a key community priority and we work closely with the Tjuntjuntjara community to address this. We offer a broad curriculum with a strong focus on learning English as a second language through the use of Aboriginal Literacy Strategies. Our students are a delight to teach as they are characterised by a passionate desire to learn, a love of books, enthusiasm, generosity, cultural pride and a sense of community.
As Principal you will ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students and encourage parents to be actively engaged in the education of their children. The role of the principal within the Department of Education is to ensure schools comply with all relevant legislation and reporting requirements and develops relationships with community organisations to the benefit of the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provideevidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
