Deputy Parliamentary Counsel
Role
The Parliamentary Counsel's Office (PCO) provides comprehensive legislative drafting and related services to the Government, its departments and agencies to ensure that clear, coherent and effective legislation is prepared to give effect to government policy and priorities. It also ensures that WA legislation is made available in an accurate, up-to-date and timely way to those who must comply with it and those who must apply and enforce it. The work of the office is at the heart of government and a Parliamentary democracy.
PCO is a professionally autonomous division of the Department of Justice and is headed by the Parliamentary Counsel. The Deputy Parliamentary Counsel is a very senior position. The duties of the position involve assisting the Parliamentary Counsel in the management and leadership of PCO, drafting the most complex or sensitive legislative instruments and providing drafting services and advice to Ministers and other members of Parliament during the passage of legislation. The duties also include contributing to the maintenance and development of PCO's capability through training, supervising and mentoring drafters, and the continuous improvement of PCO's service delivery.
The current Deputy Parliamentary Counsel is retiring, and the successful applicant is expected to start work in early February 2018.
Tenure/duration of appointment: Permanent full-time.
Special Requirements
This position is for a highly experienced and very senior legislative drafter with extensive specialist knowledge and experience in drafting legislation in a drafting office and highly developed leadership and management skills and experience. Applicants must be legal practitioners who are eligible to be admitted to practice in Western Australia or whose qualifications for admission in Western Australia have been approved by the Legal Practice Board.
