About the Opportunity

The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) is seeking an experienced and influential communications leader to join our Office of the Director General as Director Strategic Communications and Engagement.

In this senior leadership role, you will lead a contemporary strategic communications and engagement function that supports DTMI’s priorities, strengthens stakeholder confidence and contributes to safer, healthier and more sustainable transport outcomes for Western Australia.

You will provide strategic direction across integrated communications disciplines, including media, digital and social media, marketing, stakeholder engagement, campaign delivery and behaviour change communications. Working closely with senior executives, the Minister’s Office(s) and key stakeholders across the Transport and Major Infrastructure Portfolio, you will play a central role in shaping clear, timely and effective communication on critical and high-profile matters.

This is a permanent opportunity. Suitable applicants through this process may receive further offers of employment in this or similar roles for a period of 12 months.

You will:

  • Lead and manage the Strategic Communications and Engagement Branch, sustaining a high-performing, collaborative and integrated communications function
  • Provide strategic communications advice and professional support to the Director General, Managing Director Transport, senior executives, the Minister’s Office(s) and other key stakeholders
  • Oversee the development, delivery and evaluation of integrated communication and engagement strategies, programs and campaigns
  • Lead proactive and reactive communications on critical, contentious and emerging issues
  • Shape strategic messaging that reflects DTMI’s purpose, values and priorities
  • Drive behaviour change communication initiatives that support safer, more sustainable and community-focused transport outcomes
  • Strengthen digital communication strategies and ensure DTMI continues to respond to contemporary communication trends
  • Build strong relationships across DTMI, the Transport and Major Infrastructure Portfolio and external stakeholder groups.

About you

We are looking for a strategic, experienced and values-led communications professional who can operate confidently in a complex, and dynamic environment.

  • Extensive experience leading a contemporary corporate communications function in a large and complex organisation
  • Strong knowledge of current and emerging communication methods, technologies and channels
  • Demonstrated experience leading strategic communication and community engagement campaigns, including evaluation and use of data-driven insights
  • Significant experience leading multidisciplinary teams, building capability and empowering others to deliver quality outcomes
  • Highly developed written communication, stakeholder engagement and advisory skills
  • The ability to craft clear, compelling messaging under pressure and provide sound strategic advice on sensitive or contentious matters.
