Who we are
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is a critical participant in the administration of justice within Western Australia, providing an independent and effective criminal prosecution service and confiscation practice.
The ODPP’s Confiscation’s team performs functions under the Criminal Confiscation Act 2000 (CPCA) in conjunction with the Proceeds of Crime Squad at the WA Police Force. The Confiscation’s team is a specialised legal practice with expertise in proceeds of crime law with qualified Australian legal practitioners, paralegals, and legal assistants.
The Confiscation team complements the ODPP’s criminal prosecution service to ensure the confiscation of illegally or criminally obtained property. Where appropriate, this may include confiscating property of persons who have been acquitted of a crime, but where the offending has been proven to the civil standard.
The opportunity
The 1LG Legal Officer (Confiscations) assists with file management of allocated cases, appearances as counsel in WA courts under supervision, and provides support to paralegal and clerical staff within the Team. It is an entry level position within the Team and is suitable for practitioners with limited legal experience with an interest in asset confiscation matters.
To be successful in this role, applicants will be admitted, or eligible for admission, as a legal practitioner in Western Australia and demonstrate experience, or the ability to develop experience, in asset confiscation and proceeds of crime matters or akin litigation. You will have developing analytical and communication skills, the ability to prepare legal documents and assist in the conduct of litigation under supervision, and the capacity to manage competing priorities while maintaining high professional and ethical standards, together with an understanding of asset confiscation law, proceeds of crime, coercive investigation powers, or litigation within a public sector or prosecution environment, or the ability to develop this knowledge.
Suitable applicants will be placed in a recruitment pool. The pool will run for a period of 12 months and may be used to fill permanent and fixed-term full time and part time vacancies if they arise, and subject to business needs.

In the course of your duties, you will encounter materials including, however not limited to, photographs, videos, written statements, and oral evidence.
