About the opportunity

There is currently one (1) full time permanent position available for immediate filling. 

This position is based in Fremantle.

As a Supervising Fisheries and Marine Officer, you will lead the delivery of fisheries compliance activities, surveillance, education and community awareness programs and day to day operations of the district. You’ll play a key leadership role to plan and execute on-water patrols and inspections, some in challenging environments. Coordinate and participate in investigations and inspections relating to breaches of fisheries and other legislation administered by the Department.

Our department’s role is to protect our oceans and waterways by enforcing laws, educating the public, and supporting sustainable practices. This is a hands-on role that goes well beyond the office which may require travel and make sound decisions in dynamic situations.

This is your opportunity to bring strong compliance experience, leadership capability and a practical understanding of fisheries and marine environments and contribute to the protection and sustainable management of fisheries.

We are looking for individuals with:   

  • Certificate qualifications in compliance and investigations and/or possession of relevant experience.
  • Well-developed knowledge and understanding of relevant compliance legislation, compliance governance frameworks, and operational procedures.
  • A current Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency or higher.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation.
  • Ability to engage with stakeholders using your well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possession or willingness to undertake First Aid Certification
  • Experience in operating and maintaining vessels, 4WD vehicles and associated equipment

DPIRD is an Emergency Management Agency and all employees may be required to work or travel during, or outside of, normal business hours to assist with incidents and emergencies.

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible for a permanent appointment to the Western Australian public sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia. To be eligible for a fixed term or a casual appointment you must have documentary evidence of your entitlement to live and work in Australia for the period as part of your application.

You will be required to provide a current National Police Certificate (police clearance) before commencing employment. If not currently held, this must be acquired prior to appointment at applicant’s expense.
