About the Role

The State Bushfire Mitigation Team is responsible for the management of vegetation on unallocated Crown land within townships across the state. This position plays a key role in reducing the risk and impact of bushfires on communities and will work in close partnership with our Indigenous Mitigation Crew to deliver effective mitigation outcomes.

The position involves a variety of operational tasks including:

  • forestry mulching, slashing, cutting and maintaining firebreaks
  • the potential to assist with fire line construction and containment during bushfire events.
  • operating a modern fleet of machinery and equipment to support the team’s objectives in managing fuel loads and improving fire resilience across the state.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a diverse and inclusive environment and to travel to various locations across the state.

The role requires the ability to:

  • Work both independently and collaboratively, often in remote regional areas,
  • Demonstrate initiative and sound judgment,
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety in all aspects of work.
  • Be physically fit and capable of passing a medical assessment

Prerequisites

Successful applicants must have the following prerequisites:

  • Possession of a current Australian Heavy Rigid licence and an ability to attain or hold a Multi Combination licence and WA Heavy Vehicle Accreditation (WAHVA) which must be valid for the duration of employment.
  • Possession of a current ticket to operate Heavy Mobile Machinery such as Compact Track Loader or Front-End Loader which must be valid for the duration of employment.
  • Physically fit and able to pass a pre-employment medical assessment.

You will be required to provide evidence of the above during your assessment.

National Police Certificate

A condition of employment for new employees of DFES is that a current National Police Certificate (less than 3 months old) is provided prior to commencement.  

Choice of Super

The Fire and Emergency Services (Superannuation Fund) Regulations 1986, prevents DFES from offering choice of super for permanent appointments. Those appointed permanently, only have the following two options:

  • Remain with their existing GESB Superannuation account; or
  • Join the Fire and Emergency Services Superannuation Fund (Click here for more information).

Those appointed on a fixed term contract do have choice of super, however if converted to permanent, employees will need to choose one on the two options listed above.
