The Role

The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) is a support role that assists teachers in delivering planned education programs and fostering a supportive, inclusive learning environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. A key focus of the role will be facilitating the transition of severely non-attending Aboriginal students back to school, providing adequate cultural support to maximise the positive impact on their re-engagement with schooling.

The AIEO acts as a liaison between the community and the school to develop educational programs that meet both educational and cultural needs. They provide mentoring and pastoral care to encourage student participation and achievement and offer support and advice to schools and teachers on managing students at risk. The role also includes designing and implementing behaviour management plans, maintaining records, and communicating with parents.

Additionally, the AIEO facilitates community input into the development of school policies related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, conducts interviews and home liaison visits, manages classroom resources, and assists with preparing and maintaining the learning environment.
