Consultant Psychiatrist (Consultation Liaison / Adult) - Albany

WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is offering a unique opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist (Adult) to join one of its highly desirable regions - the Great Southern.

This is a recruitment pool offering Full Time, Part Time, Permanent or Fixed Term opportunities, commencing in July. Fixed Term roles may include options for extension(s).

This role is suitable for someone looking for a Part Time role in Consultation Liaison psychiatry, or a Full Time role mixing Consultation Liaison and General Adult clinic work.

MP Year 1–9: $412,161 – $523,436 per annum.

The above salary is as per WA Health System Medical Practitioners AMA Industrial Agreement 2024 (inclusive of base Salary, 12% superannuation, and professional development allowance). This is subject to the assessment of qualifications, clinical skills, and years of practice.

Great Southern Mental Health Department

The Great Southern Mental Health Service is a well-established service. The adult psychiatry component of the service comprises an authorised inpatient unit with a total of 16 beds, including four PICU beds, co-located with the Community Mental Health Clinic. The Adult Community Mental Health service includes the Acute Assessment & Treatment Team and the longer-term Continuing Treatment Team. Each team is staffed by a psychiatrist, at least one registrar, a resident medical officer, experienced nurses, Aboriginal mental health workers, lived experience workers and a mix of allied health professionals.

The team provides care to individuals requiring specialist mental health support across both community and inpatient settings, delivering pharmacological, behavioural, and therapeutic interventions with an emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach. The adult team works collaboratively with other mental health services, including Community Older Adult, Child and Adolescent, and Inpatient Consultation Liaison teams. In total, the psychiatry team includes six consultant psychiatrists, eight registrars, two resident medical officers, and two interns, resulting in robust peer support network.

About the Role:

In this position, you will deliver comprehensive clinical assessments and provide psychiatric care and treatment for adults in the community or inpatient setting. The caseloads and on-call requirements are extremely manageable.

The Consultation Liaison role covers referrals from the general medical, surgical and maternity wards and works closely with the palliative care team, including in the hospice.

There is a strong commitment to ongoing education, training, and research with ongoing projects and links with the local Rural Clinical School and local Universities. Consultants with subspecialty qualifications or specific clinical interests are welcome to incorporate these into the service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive clinical assessments, diagnoses, and psychiatric treatment, ensuring that best practice clinical interventions are provided to clients.
  • Liaise and confer regularly with general practitioners and other health care professionals.
  • Supervise and mentor medical students, junior doctors and training registrars.
  • Participate in continuing professional development and contribute to education, training and research projects relevant to the mental health service.
  • Participate in the on-call roster for the mental health team and the ECT roster.

The Successful Candidates will have:  

  • Eligibility for registration by the Medical Board of Australia in the speciality of Psychiatry
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrist (FRANZCP) or be eligible for Fellowship
  • Extensive clinical experience in adult mental health
