About the role
Purpose of the role
- Lead and manage the Department’s financial systems, ensuring strong governance, system integrity and continuous improvement.
- Enable high‑quality financial reporting and data insights through Power BI and analytics.
- Ensure system changes, upgrades and vendor activities are well governed and aligned with business priorities.
Key responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction to the Financial Systems team.
- Oversee financial system administration, configuration, integrations and upgrades.
- Maintain strong internal controls, policies and data governance practices.
- Partner with senior finance leaders, operational areas, KIT and external vendors.
- Translate complex system and reporting changes into practical business solutions.

Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment to permanent positions in the West Australian Public Sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
Successful applicants must have relevant tertiary qualifications either in accounting, commerce, finance, information systems or an approved equivalent.

- Please provide a response to the following two (2) questions:
Question 1 – Governance, risk and executive decision‑making
Scenario‑based written response.
You are accountable for a major financial system upgrade/change. During implementation, business areas raise concerns about data integrity and reporting confidence, while the system vendor advises the solution meets contractual and technical specifications.
In no more than one (1) page, describe:
- How you would assess technical, financial and governance risks, including system configuration, integrations, controls and data integrity.
- How you would test and validate vendor advice and assurance (e.g. testing regimes, control reviews, independent assurance).
- How you would make and defend a sound, evidence‑based decision in a high‑risk environment, including any trade‑offs considered.
Please provide examples to support your claims.
Question 2 – Transformational leadership and capability uplift
Behavioural written response.
In no more than one (1) page, provide a detailed example of where you led or enabled transformational change in a financial system or reporting environment. Please provide examples to support your claims.
Your response should cover:
- The starting point (technical environment, governance maturity, reporting capability or organisational challenges).
- How you set direction and articulated a vision for improvement.
- How you led people through change, aligned stakeholders and built capability across finance, technology and business areas.
- The technical and process improvements delivered (e.g. systems, controls, analytics, data governance).
- How the change resulted in sustained improvements to decision‑making, assurance or organisational performance.
All the Essential Selection Criteria listed on the JDF will be assessed at a later stage in the recruitment process.
Subsequent Vacancies
Applicants found suitable but not recommended for this vacancy, may be considered for subsequent similar vacancies in the Department of Justice for a period of twelve (12) months, in accordance with Part 5 (General Appointment) of the Commissioner's Instructions No. 2: Filling a Public Sector Vacancy and Commissioner’s Instructions and No. 39: Interim Arrangements to Fill Public Sector Vacancies. Permanent, fixed term, full time and part time appointments may be offered during this period.
