The School of Special Educational Needs: Disability (SSEN: D) is seeking to create a pool of dedicated and dynamic leaders for the Coordinator, Consulting Teacher Service – Disability role (previously known as Head of Service Area), for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2026 school year and up to the end of Term 3, 2027. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

The School of Special Educational Needs: Disability

SSEN: D are seeking experienced school leaders who are passionate about supporting our mission to  partner with schools to provide collaborative support and resources that promote learning environments where every student’s potential is realised. We seek to make a valued contribution to education through the provision of evidence informed strategies and practical support for students with diagnosed and imputed disability and specific learning disorders, enrolled in WA public schools.

SSEN: D is part of a federation of eight Specialist Schools within the Department of Education, inclusive of the four schools of Special Educational Need; the School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN: BE), the School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health (SSEN: MMH), the School of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSEN: S) and the School of Special Educational Needs: Disability (SSEN: D). Significant collaboration occurs between the Specialist Schools to coordinate support for schools and, where possible, sharing of resources, expertise, professional learning and complex case management.

SSEN: D support includes, but is not limited to:

  • Professional development, advice and information on disability and inclusive education-related topics, including policy, legislation, planning and reporting requirements.
  • Consultation and collaboration with school-based staff in meeting the educational needs of individual students with disability through the provision of evidence-informed strategies and interventions; this includes direct work with students, modelling of strategies, coaching of staff and provision of resources.
  • Consultation, trialling and provision of specialised equipment to support educational access for students with disability, including mobility and positioning and assistive technology.
  • Partnering with school administrators in developing school-wide processes and guidelines to facilitate effective support for students with diagnosed and imputed disability, and specific learning disorders.

SSEN: D's leadership team are based across both the Statewide Services Centre (Padbury) and at our South Hub (South Lake). Appointed applicants may be required to move between these locations and will be required to visit regional areas. The Coordinator - Consulting Teacher Service - Disability (Coordinator) will be required to work within an extended leadership team to lead strategic planning, implement and review School and Department priorities. They are responsible for assigned portfolios, membership on identified committees, and fostering positive relationships and partnerships with networks, regions, external agencies and Statewide Services supports.

The role may involve travelling to locations in local and regional areas, including state-wide travel with overnight stays and may include long-distance driving, some of which may be in remote locations. Suitable applicants may be required to hold a current and valid 'C' class driver's licence.

The Coordinator should have the ability to effectively lead, communicate and coordinate support to schools. Suitable applicants should have experience across a range of educational contexts, providing leadership in the area of disability and supporting students with additional needs. Ideally, Coordinators will have a strong understanding of creating a positive work culture and fostering teams with a strength-based approach to produce positive outcomes.

Coordinators are responsible for:

  • Leading teams of Consulting Teachers, located in the Perth metropolitan area and across regional locations.
  • Providing a responsive and proactive range of supports to schools and regions.
  • Supporting employee performance and promoting professional development.
  • Effective leadership of complex case management, often in collaboration with multiple key stakeholders.
  • Contributing to strategic planning and school improvement, in collaboration with an extended leadership team.

Suitable applicants would have the ability to innovate bold and creative solutions, and to be able to respond effectively to short timelines, within a high-pressure environment. As such, applicants should be flexible, able to work both collaboratively and independently, and be aligned to Department initiatives and priorities, particularly those related to disability and inclusion
