Situated in the scenic South West region, the Wellington District is a popular destination for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. The region features world class tracks and trails including the Bibbulman Track and Munda Biddi Trail. The area is popular all year round with magnificent shows of some of the 300 species of colourful wildflowers every spring and over 70 bird species. You may even spot a unique animal such as a chuditch, quenda, quokka, brushtail possum, woylie or western ringtail possum.
The South West Region’s key service deliverables include nature conservation, parks and visitor services, sustainable forest management, fire management, and land-use planning. The region’s headquarters is based in Bunbury. The Wellington District’s main office is, located in Collie, with a smaller work centre in Harvey.
We currently have an opportunity for a Fire Operations Officer to join our team.
Under the general direction of the District Fire Coordinator, this position:
- Responsible for planning, organising, training and implementing programs and operations relating to fire management, (including prescribed burning and bushfire preparedness) within the Wellington district.
- Co-ordinates and facilitates fire training for district staff and contractors.
- Undertakes projects as required by District Fire Coordinator and District Manager.

Selection Criteria
Applicants should address the following four (4) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than four (4) pages in total.
- Demonstrated operational experience in the management of fire related activities, including fire suppression procedures, liaison with other firefighting and emergency organisations, planning and implementing prescribed burning programs.
- Evidence of well-developed interpersonal and conflict resolution skills and experience in leading and managing teams, including preparing and implementing works programs, scheduling work, setting goals, controlling and reviewing progress, and managing volunteers and contractors.
- Experience in using fire management as a land management tool to achieve biodiversity conservation, and park and forest management outcomes.
- Evidence of ability to use computer software (including GPS, GIS and software such as ArcView or equivalent) for data management and report writing and applying financial management skills to budget preparation and expenditure control and monitoring.
