About us

The Mental Health Advocacy Service (MHAS) is established under Part 20 of the Mental Health Act 2014.  It is an independent body providing support, advocacy and rights protection for identified persons, including involuntary mental health patients and psychiatric hostel residents. The Chief Mental Health Advocate (the Chief) engages Senior Mental Health Advocates (Senior Advocates) who supervise Mental Health Advocates, Youth Advocates and other specialist Advocates.

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic General Counsel.

About the role

The General Counsel is responsible for operating with a high degree of autonomy and initiative in supporting the Chief to exercise and discharge the statutory requirements of the Mental Health Act 2014, Criminal Law (Mental Impairment) Act 2023, Declared Places (Mental Impairment) Act 2015 and other relevant legislation. This will entail provision of high quality and timely legal advice on complex and sensitive legal matters including:

  • Interpretation and application of legislation with regard to applicable legislation
  • Representing the Chief in legal proceedings and meetings as required
  • Negotiating complex legal matters
  • Drafting legal documents.
