The Opportunity:

This is a permanent opportunity.

The Position: Freedom of Information Coordinator,

Step into a key role as a Freedom of Information (FOI) Coordinator and help drive transparency and accountability across the agency. You’ll take a lead role in coordinating FOI applications under the Freedom of Information Act 1992, carrying out document searches, applying exemptions and preparing draft decisions. You’ll also play an important role in building organisational confidence around FOI obligations and supporting improvements to information policies, processes and practices.

In this position, you’ll guide and support FOI team members, oversee workflow and quality, and manage complex or high‑impact FOI requests that require careful judgement and strong communication. You’ll work closely with applicants, document custodians and senior leaders to deliver clear, timely and customer‑focused outcomes, while upholding record-keeping principles. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, applying legislation, and working in a space where accuracy, integrity and transparency really matter.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Support the Manager FOI by supervising staff, overseeing daily workflow and ensuring tasks are completed to a consistent, high standard.
  • Demonstrate DWER’s Leadership Expectations by Leading Others, modelling the behaviours required for effective leadership and contributing to a positive, accountable workplace culture.
  • Manage complex FOI matters by researching and analysing documents, applying legislative requirements and providing clear, informed guidance to document custodians.
  • Engage with applicants and internal stakeholders to clarify requests, explain FOI obligations and support the delivery of accurate, timely and customer‑focused outcomes.

At the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, we are committed to fostering a modern workplace that supports flexibility, collaboration, and wellbeing.

Our flexible work arrangements include options for alternative work locations and adaptable schedules, designed to accommodate a variety of professional and personal needs.

We recognise that effective work can happen in different settings, and our approach reflects this, enabling staff to contribute meaningfully while maintaining balance and resilience.

We are committed to creating an equitable and diverse workforce that promotes an inclusive and supportive workplace environment. We value the unique diversity of experience that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, women and youth bring to our workforce.

Join us and be part of a department that values innovation, inclusivity, and the evolving nature of work.
