This recruitment pool will run for a period of twelve (12) months and may be used to fill ongoing fixed term contracts.

A fixed term contract of up to five (5) years may be offered to successful applicants.

About the role

The Justice Health and Wellbeing Service (JHWS) provides a range of primary care services across WA to patients in custody. Services encompass interventions to identify and manage acute and chronic conditions (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, asthma); infectious diseases; sexually transmissible diseases and blood borne viruses; co-morbidity (mental health and alcohol and drug addiction services); and referral to specialist and tertiary services.

Population focussed health improvement initiatives are also provided including health protection; disease prevention; infection control; communicable disease outbreak management; and immunisation.

The JHWS ensures that clinical effectiveness, consumer focus and quality improvement are embedded to assist Corrective Services to provide high quality, cost effective, safe and patient centred care.

The Prison Medical Officer functions as a medical officer in accordance with the Prisons Act 1981 and the Young offenders Act 1994, providing high quality primary health care to patients in a correctional facility, including male, female and youth detainees. 

The Prison Medical Officer also provides an on-call service including out of hours advice, and attendance for general medical management of male and female prisoners and youth detainees in the custody of the Department.

The Prison Medical Officer works closely with health centre staff (nurses, receptionists and allied health professionals) and custodial staff in planning, organising and controlling the provision of health care.

Please Note: The salary range listed is inclusive of all salary based allowances. The final salary offered will be dependent on the applicant's skills, experience, and qualifications.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment, you must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Medical Practitioner.

In accordance with the National Child Safety Principles, people who work directly with children and young people, you must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position.

Benefits and opportunities

  • Monday to Friday 80 hours a fortnight, excluding weekends and public holidays.
  • A Departmental mobile phone provided for rostered after hours on-call shifts with generous call back allowance payable if work is undertaken.
  • 10 days Professional Development (PD) Leave or pro-rata equivalent and 2 days additional Public Service holidays where applicable.
  • Professional Development allowance of $32,360 per year.
  • 13 weeks Long Service Leave accrual after seven years’ service or pro-rata equivalent.
  • Free employee parking at site.
  • Fitness passport providing a wide range of gym, pool, and fitness centre discounts available for employees and their families.
  • Relocation assistance/allowance available for new employees relocating from Interstate or New Zealand (if eligible).
