Why Work with Us?

At Main Roads we are committed to delivering a world-class road network and creating positive, lasting impacts for WA communities. We play a critical role in overseeing the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operations of major roads and highways across the State.

With a rich history dating back to 1926 and an exciting future ahead, Main Roads Western Australia is the WA State Government agency responsible for managing the State’s road network safely, connecting people and places. Main Roads is not just about roads. It’s about people.

About the Role

The Structures Engineering Branch plays a vital role in managing the State’s bridge assets, both directly and indirectly. As the central hub of technical expertise for structures and waterways, the Branch provides specialist advice on a wide range of engineering matters. Core activities include bridge inspections, load ratings, hydraulic and hydrology design, project design reviews, technical guidance, standards development, heavy vehicle bridge assessments, and selected design work. Research projects, while a smaller component, remain an important part of the Branch’s ongoing innovation.

Main Roads is seeking an individual to undertake the structural assessment of heavy load movements over bridges and manage bridge load capacity information, including recommendations for bridge load limit postings. You will assess and maintain approvals for network access period permits, manage heavy load records and databases, and provide specialist technical advice to Main Roads staff. You will also ensure the maintenance and accuracy of the load rating component of the bridge database.

The successful applicant will prepare information and advice to support policy direction affecting heavy haulage, including national freight guidelines and standards. You will undertake and manage detailed bridge load ratings to determine safe load capacities and advise Regions on load limit postings and urgent repair requirements.

About You

You will hold a Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and bring demonstrated experience in bridge design, analysis, and load rating. Your ability to build positive, proactive, and professional relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders will be essential. Strong capability in managing employees and resources, along with experience fostering effective working relationships, will also be key to your success.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Strong experience in bridge engineering, including bridge maintenance, design and analysis
  • Proven capability in bridge load ratings across various structure types and materials, with a strong understanding of Main Roads WA’s standard load rating vehicles
  • Well‑developed analytical skills, with the ability to assess risk, analyse structural and asset data, and develop practical solutions to improve bridge capacity and performance
  • Experience working with asset and permit management systems, including Bridge Management Systems (BMS), and providing technical advice to support system use, development and improvement
  • Leadership capability in managing staff performance and development, and effectively managing financial, technological and physical resources to achieve outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships and provide specialist technical advice to internal teams, Regions, consultants and external stakeholders

What We Offer:

At Main Roads, you can have a challenging, flexible and rewarding career that takes you exactly where you want to go with an organisation who supports a healthy work-life balance to help with what is important to you.

In addition to our competitive salary and 12% superannuation, some of the benefits of working with Main Roads include:

  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Attractive leave provisions
  • Choice of a 40 or 37.5 hour working week
  • Training and development opportunities
