About the role
The State Solicitor's Office (the Office) is seeking an experienced lawyer to join our busy Advice, Policy and Public Law (APPL) section. We're looking for a senior lawyer who has significant expertise in Privacy and Information Law to lead this practice area, and lawyers whose expertise in this area is developing to join the team.
This role will provide high‑level legal advice on privacy, responsible information sharing and other areas of information law, particularly in relation to the implementation of the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA) (PRIS Act). The position plays a critical role in preparing public sector agencies for the commencement of the Act’s privacy and data‑sharing provisions.
As a Privacy and Information Law specialist, you will work closely with agencies to advise on the operation and application of the Information Privacy Principles, the privacy obligations imposed on public sector entities, and the legal requirements for information sharing agreements under the PRIS Act. You will advise on the operation and application of other statutory information protection and disclosure provisions, and agencies' equitable and other obligations. You will support agencies to understand their responsibilities and navigate complex privacy and information protection and disclosure issues within the new PRIS Act framework.
This recruitment process is designed to identify a body of suitable lawyers at the following levels:
- Solicitor L3LG $146,998 - $157,135 per annum or pro rata plus super.
- Assistant State Solicitor Level L4LG$165,720 - $195,462 per annum or pro rata plus super.
- Assistant State Solicitor Level L5LG$213,902 per annum or pro rata plus super.
- Senior Assistant State Solicitor Level L6LG$236,096 - $264,726 per annum or pro rata plus super.
We have a current opening for a senior lawyer that we are keen to fill immediately. The decision on how many offers of employment will be made, at what levels and when, will be determined by business needs. Offers of employment which are drawn from this recruitment pool will be for fixed term or permanent opportunities, depending on business needs.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- Experience in provision of legal advice in relation to privacy and information law, with significant experience required for the Senior Assistant State Solicitor who will lead the practice area
- High degree of legal ability and knowledge in advising on matters of legal and factual complexity, with a very high degree of legal ability and knowledge required for the Senior Assistant State Solicitor who will lead the practice area
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and provide guidance to junior lawyers
- Ability to build productive relationships with external stakeholders and clients.
