WA Health is committed to growing the Aboriginal workforce as a part of WA Health’s Aboriginal Workforce Policy.  As a measure to achieve equality, Section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 applies to this position.  Aboriginal people are encouraged to apply.

About the role:

  • Are you passionate about obesity prevention and public health?
  • Do you want to contribute to obesity, food and nutrition policy in WA?
  • Do you have experience working with nutrition evidence or food policy to support population health outcomes?
  • Do you have well-developed written skills?

If so, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

The Obesity Prevention Team leads strategic public health policy, priority areas and programs across Western Australia to prevent obesity and improve population-level healthy eating. The development and implementation of evidence-based policy to support healthier food environments and nutrition outcomes is a key responsibility of this position.

This position works collaboratively across government, including regulatory and policy areas, and non-government agencies delivering population-based obesity prevention programs in WA. Developing effective partnerships across a range of sectors is vital to building good public health policy that addresses the many factors influencing obesity.

What we are looking for:

To be successful in this role, please demonstrate that you:

  • Have a strong track record developing and delivering innovative, evidence-based public health policies, programs, or initiatives focused on healthy eating, obesity prevention, or chronic disease prevention, aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Strong understanding of nutrition science, with the ability to apply this to population health policy initiatives.
  • Apply strategic thinking to address complex public health challenges—such as nutrition and obesity—by designing effective policy options and supporting implementation approaches that achieve measurable outcomes.
  • Build and maintain productive partnerships across government, research, and community sectors to support policy development and program delivery.
  • Communicate effectively through the preparation of high-quality discussion papers, reports, briefings, and correspondence that support informed decision-making.
  • Understand public health nutrition and obesity issues, including population health and prevention principles.

Eligibility to Apply: To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have a valid working visa (for fixed term appointments) or be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia (for permanent appointments).

Other Conditions:  WA Health engages staff in positions of trust and responsibility. WA Health policies require applicants to undertake a criminal records screening and integrity checking as part of the appointment process. As well as undertaking a criminal record screening and integrity checking, you may also be required to undertake a working with children check (if required for the role) and a pre-employment health assessment. We may ask referees to comment on your integrity and past demonstration of ethical behaviour. Please note that adverse information does not necessarily disqualify an applicant but will be considered as part of the appointment process.

Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other "similar" vacancies throughout the health service. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised vacancy, then the next most suitable applicant may also be selected from this process. Both of these options remain valid for a period of twelve (12) months from when the authorised delegate endorses the recruitment decision.

Employee Benefits:  In addition to the great salary our employees enjoy an amazing range of benefits which may include (in line with operational requirements):

  • 12% employer contributed superannuation into a fund of your choice. For further information on superannuation click here.
  • Access to salary packaging arrangements
  • Professional Development Opportunities and Study Leave/assistance
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Flexible leave arrangements

Selection Criteria: Please see the attached Job Description Form (available online at www.jobs.health.wa.gov.au).
