This is a permanent part time (0.6FTE) position, commencing Term 2, 2026.

The Role

The School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health (SSEN: MMH) teacher role plays a vital part in strengthening partnerships between Health and Education by enhancing communication, coordination, and collaboration between the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and schools in the regional area of the Lower South West. The successful applicant will be based within a community health setting in Albany, providing outreach and support to schools across this region.

As a SSEN: MMH teacher within CAMHS, you would use your comprehensive educational expertise to contribute to an interdisciplinary team supporting the educational, medical, and psychosocial needs of young people. You will ideally act as a crucial liaison between clinicians, schools, and regional staff, ensuring that students with mental health challenges are supported to engage in learning and reach their full potential.

Key Focus Areas

  • Strengthen partnerships between CAMHS and regional schools to improve shared understanding and communication.
  • Support schools in developing tailored strategies to enhance educational outcomes for students referred to CAMHS.
  • Promote collaborative practice within the interdisciplinary health team, the Department and across agencies to address student need.

The successful applicant will ideally bring

  • Broad curriculum knowledge and a solid understanding of education systems, school processes and operations.
  • Experience across K–12 education, including familiarity with associated pedagogical approaches.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and effective negotiation.
  • A collaborative mindset, openness to diverse perspectives, and the ability to work constructively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Professional sensitivity and respectful interactions when supporting vulnerable students and engaging with families, educators, and clinicians.    

The School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health (SSEN: MMH)

SSEN: MMH is one of seven specialist schools within Statewide Services. SSEN: MMH provides educational support for students whose medical or mental health prevents them from successfully participating in their enrolled school programs. The SSEN: MMH administrative centre is based at Perth Children’s Hospital in Nedlands, with metropolitan programs in hospital and community health settings across sites in the north and south metropolitan educational regions and community health settings across regional educational regions in WA.

SSEN: MMH is a school that strives for excellence through building the capacity of staff within a culture of support and by creating a learning environment where students can connect, learn and thrive. We encourage staff to share knowledge and exhibit self-reflective practices with a focus on quality teaching, while self-improvement is promoted amongst our staff through Professional Learning Communities.
