The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) is looking for enthusiastic, strategic, and highly competent people to join the Freight, Ports, Aviation and Reform (FPAR) directorate and lead the development, delivery and review of policies, strategies and projects across Western Australia’s freight, port and aviation sectors.
Within DTMI, the FPAR directorate provides contemporary strategies, policies, and regulatory frameworks to deliver coordinated, resilient transport infrastructure and systems. We are a diverse team of experienced and passionate policy makers, skilled at developing and influencing government policies, plans and strategies across freight, ports and aviation sectors. Our work drives strategic projects that deliver Government’s aspirations for efficient, sustainable and resilient transport systems that meet the needs of our WA economy, our regions and our communities.
The Opportunities
There are currently 2 permanent positions available for immediate filling. Other opportunities for permanent and contract roles are likely to become available into the future.
You’ll lead or contribute to strategic policy, undertake high‑level analysis, and deliver projects that strengthen the State’s transport system. Through freight reforms, ports development coordination and aviation programs, your work will influence government decision‑making and support a safe, sustainable and efficient transport network.

These roles are focused on strategic policy and planning and are not operational roles that deal with managing or overseeing day-to-day transport operations.

About our teams
The Freight Team helps shape the future of freight across Western Australia. You’ll lead strategic planning that strengthens supply chain resilience and supports both regional and metropolitan freight priorities. Your work will ensure WA’s freight network keeps pace with the State’s ambitions for economic diversification and decarbonisation. If you’re a strategic thinker with strengths in policy, planning or project management, this is your chance to use your leadership and stakeholder skills to influence whole‑of‑supply‑chain outcomes and deliver meaningful, long‑term impact.
In the Aviation Team, you’ll use your policy expertise to improve connectivity and support the liveability of regional communities. Strong project management skills will help you guide and oversee aviation initiatives that directly benefit people across regional WA. You’ll work closely with airlines to maintain reliable regular public transport (RPT) services, advocate for improved access where challenges exist. Your contribution will strengthen regional communities and ensure they remain connected and supported.
The Ports Team provides leadership, governance and strategic direction to ensure WA’s ports continue to drive the State’s economic and community prosperity. As part of this team, you’ll work closely with WA’s five port authorities to support strong governance, safe operations and long‑term planning for growth and development. You’ll play a key role in shaping and implementing strategic port policy, offering high‑quality advice and building trusted relationships across government, industry and port authorities.
The Transport Reform Team is responsible for influencing and delivering national and State transport policy and reform, particularly where there is a cross-Transport Portfolio interest in the outcome. The Transport Reform team works closely with senior executives across the Portfolio to provide advice and recommendation on strategic policy matters. Priorities for the team include electric vehicle statistics and policy and future transport technologies such as drones and low and zero emission vehicles.
