from skilled and experienced medical practitioners in the specialty
of Psychiatry to serve on the Western Australian Police Force –
Police Medical Board.
The Police Medical Board is
established under section 33ZC of the Police Act. The
Police Medical Board consists of three medical practitioners
(registered under the Health Practitioner Regulation National
Law 2010 (WA)) nominated by the Director General, Department
of Health, as required under Regulation 5(2) of the Police
(Medical Retirement) Regulations 2019 (WA).

Position
Description
Section 33ZC of the Police
Act provides that where the Commissioner of Police (Commissioner)
reasonably suspects that a member is medically unfit, the member
may be directed to attend an examination by a Police Medical
Board.
The purpose of an
examination by the Police Medical Board pursuant to s33ZC(2) of the
Police Act is to assist the Commissioner to determine whether the
member should be retired on medical grounds.
As a member of the Western
Australia Police Force – Police Medical Board you will be required
to:
- Medically assess the
member to determine whether he/she is medically unfit at the
point of examination and consider medical information received
prior to the assessment.
- Review
details of the medical condition(s) that have rendered the
member medically unfit.
- Provide
the Commissioner with a report as to whether the member should
be retired on medical grounds.
Members of the Western
Australian Police Force – Police Medical Board are paid $500 per
case assessed. A typical half-day sitting involves the assessment
of four cases.
Essential Selection
Criteria
- Eligible
for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and
Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of
Psychiatrists (RANZCP) or recognised equivalent.
- Demonstrated extensive
knowledge and clinical experience and skills in the practice of
psychiatry and associated assessment and diagnostic
procedures.
- High-level report
writing skills and demonstrated high level interpersonal,
negotiation and conflict resolution skills including the
ability to liaise effectively with consumers and organisational
stakeholders.
Desirable Selection
Criteria
- Experience as a member
of similar Boards.
- An
enthusiasm for being part of the Police Medical Board and the
willingness to attend regular meetings (e.g. once per
month).
- Current
knowledge and commitment to Equal Opportunity in all aspects of
