This recruitment pool will run for a period of twenty four (24) months and may be used to fill ongoing permanent opportunities.

About the role
The Drug Detection Unit (DDU) contributes to the safe, secure and efficient operation of custodial facilities by utilising detection dogs and other technologies to deter, detect and disrupt illegal drugs and other contraband entering custodial facilities.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting searches of individuals, environments and property with a detection dog or other drug detection technology
- The full care, fitness and welfare of a detection dog during its working life including the provision of a healthy and secure property/home environment
- Responsibility for the operational effectiveness and ongoing maintenance of their detection dog
- Conducting ongoing use, trials and research of drug detection technology
In order to be appointed as a DDO you must be able to demonstrate and maintain the following requirements:
- Exemplify behaviours which demonstrate respect, integrity, good judgement, self-discipline and initiative
- Work effectively as a team member, respond to directions and instructions, while building positive working relationships
- Be able to operate within a structured environment with limited supervision
- Have highly developed communication skills
- Have a demonstrated affinity for dogs
- Be willing to maintain personal health and fitness to a pre-determined standard
Eligibility
Special conditions:
- These positions are only open to current Prison Officers and Youth Custodial Officers employed by the Department of Justice.
- A current ‘C’ class motor vehicle driver’s licence
- A valid Senior First Aid qualification (or equivalent) received from an accredited training provider
- The willingness and ability to travel intrastate by airplane with or without a dog
- Successful applicants must be willing, where required, to home kennel their allocated dog and use their private vehicle to transport their allocated dog to and from their residence and place of duty, generous allowances are provided for this.
Permanent positions – To be eligible for appointment to permanent positions in the West Australian Public Sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
WWC positions – In accordance with the National Child Safety Principles, people who work directly with children and young people, you must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position.

Successful applicants appointed from a pool will be subject to a 9-month probationary period as a Drug Detection Officer. During probation successful applicants must undertake the necessary mandatory training programs and pass relevant assessments as prescribed by the Drug Detection Unit to the required standards.
Pool Recruitment
This pool will be open for a period of 24 months from the day after the breach of standard claim period closes. Permanent, fixed term, full time and part time appointments may be offered as vacancies arise; however, an appointment is not guaranteed.
The Department of Justice uses recruitment pools to build a bank of talent for future opportunities. Applicants found suitable in this pool, may be considered for subsequent, similar vacancies, with the Department of Justice for the duration of the pool.
