About the opportunity
There is currently one (1), 12 month fixed term, full time position with the possibility of extension and/or permanency available for immediate filling.
As a Laboratory Technician working in molecular biology within plant pathology, you will assist senior officers with routine diagnostic tasks, including molecular testing to identify diseases and pests. Your duties will include preparing samples, maintaining lab equipment, performing PCR, qPCR and other molecular assays, recording and analysing data, and supporting research activities. You will also collaborate with colleagues, , and ensure adherence to safety protocols, contributing to DPIRD's efforts in maintaining healthy and sustainable agriculture in Western Australia.
An understanding of laboratory quality systems will be highly advantageous. To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate a willingness to work on diverse projects while also contributing to the general maintenance of laboratory equipment, consumables, and work areas. This may include assisting other labs such as Molecular Animal Pathology. We are looking for individuals with:
- Strong attention to detail when handling samples, sample preparation, in conducting tests, and recording results accurately
- Good analytical skills for interpreting data, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring accurate outcomes
- Ability to work effectively within a team, collaborating and supporting colleagues as needed
- Experience in molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, PCR, qPCR and gel electrophoresis.
- Experience in high throughput sequencing (HTS) library preparation and operation of various HTS platforms is desired.

DPIRD is an Emergency Management Agency and all employees may be required to work or travel during, or outside of, normal business hours to assist with incidents and emergencies.
