The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) seek to establish a pool of suitable applicants for the position of Communications Systems Officer. The pool will be valid for until exhausted or a decision is made to close the pool. There will be several positions available for immediate commencement following the recruitment process.
Suitable applicants may be offered a fixed term or permanent position as they become available. Being appointed to the pool does not guarantee you placement in a position.

About the Role
As a Communications Systems Officer (CSO) you will work in our Communications Centre as part of a dynamic team delivering high quality, customer focused emergency operations services.
You will play a central role in this challenging, high pressure environment by:
- Answering 000 and other emergency related calls.
- Dispatching personnel in response to a wide range of emergencies including fire, storm, cyclone, flood, hazardous material, rescue or search.
- Operating telephony and radio telephone equipment.
- Utilising DFES operational computer systems, software and applications.
- Recording information from emergency incidents using DFES reporting systems.
- Work effectively within a team environment while prioritising tasks based on urgency and operational needs.
This position is located at the Cockburn Emergency Services Complex but you may occasionally be required to work from our Belmont Centre. Successful candidates will be required to work in accordance with the current shift arrangements of the WA Fire Services EBA.

Job Information Sessions
Candidates are strongly recommended to attend a job information session to be conducted at the DFES Cockburn Emergency Services Complex located at 20 Stockton Bend Cockburn Central.
These sessions will cover the following:
- Overview of the role by a serving CSO
- Watch a video of the State Operations area to assist you to understand the duties of the CSO
- Listen to recordings of a CSO answering emergency calls
- Answer any questions regarding the role.
These job information sessions will be conducted at the Cockburn Emergency Services Complex at the following dates and times:
- Wednesday 21 January 6 – 7pm
- Saturday 24 January 10 – 11am
- Saturday 24 January 3 – 4pm
- Wednesday 28 January 6 – 7pm
Places for each information session are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Employment Conditions and Additional Information
DFES is an emergency services organisation and all employees may be required to work or travel outside of normal business hours to assist with emergencies.
Aptitude, Psychological and Medical pre employment assessments -including Alcohol and Other Drugs Screenings, will form part of the recruitment process.
Successful candidates will be required to undertake a mandatory 160 hours of training conducted during normal business hours and a further 160 hours of training under operational conditions. An initial contract will be offered for this training period.
After successful completion of training, you may be offered a further contract and rostered to an on-shift position with ongoing training, mentoring and assessments. The contract may be extended, or a permanent position offered to candidates that meet the requirements of a performance review.

Eligibility To Apply
You must be an Australian Citizen or hold permanent residency to be considered for permanent appointments or hold a working visa covering the term of the contract (proof must be provided with your application) to be eligible for this position
National Police Certificate
A condition of employment for new employees of DFES is that a current National Police Certificate (less than 3 months old) is provided prior to commencement.
Choice of Super
The Fire and Emergency Services (Superannuation Fund) Regulations 1986, prevents DFES from offering choice of super for permanent appointments. Those appointed permanently, only have the following two options:
- Remain with their existing GESB Superannuation account; or
- Join the Fire and Emergency Services Superannuation Fund (Click here for more information).
Those appointed on a fixed term contract do have choice of super, however if converted to permanent, employees will need to choose one on the two options listed above.
