Permanent Vacancy

We currently have three (3) permanent full-time positions available for immediate filling.

This selection process may be used to fill other similar at level vacancies that arise within twelve (12) months. Applicants deemed suitable but not recommended may be considered for those roles.

About the Role

Aboriginality is a genuine qualification for this position in accordance with Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.

The State Bushfire Mitigation Team is responsible for the management of vegetation on Unallocated Crown Land and Unmanaged Reserves within the Perth metropolitan area and all gazetted WA townsites. This position plays a key role in reducing the risk and impact of bushfires on communities.

The role is responsible for:

  • Using various tools, machines and equipment to remove or modify vegetation, such as firebreak construction and maintenance work, erecting signage and maintenance of water points
  • Participating in a range of vegetation management and fuel reduction activities, including machine mulching, slashing, line trimming, and chainsaw/pole saw operations.
  • Use chemical spraying techniques to manage vegetation growth.
  • Ensuring work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in alignment with environmental considerations.
  • Maintain relevant qualifications and undertake training to meet organisational requirements.  

During bushfire events, the crew may be deployed to various locations within Western Australia to assist with response and recovery operations.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a diverse and inclusive environment and to travel to various locations across the state.

The role requires the ability to:

  • Work both independently and collaboratively, often in remote regional areas.
  • Demonstrate initiative and sound judgment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety in all aspects of work.

  • Possession of a current unrestricted Australian C-Class (manual) driver’s licence which must be valid for the duration of employment.

  • DFES is an emergency services organisation and all employees may be required to work or travel outside of normal business hours to assist with emergencies.
  • This position will be required to work away from home for multiple periods of time each not exceeding two weeks. This aligns with seasonal demands and operational needs across the State.
  • This position may require the applicant to be on call afterhours and on weekends on a rotational basis for periods of seasonal risk.
  • Any of the above conditions will be compensated in accordance with the relevant industrial instrument.

National Police Certificate

A condition of employment for new employees of DFES is that a current National Police Certificate (less than 3 months old) is provided prior to commencement.  

Choice of Super

The Fire and Emergency Services (Superannuation Fund) Regulations 1986, prevents DFES from offering choice of super for permanent appointments. Those appointed permanently, only have the following two options:

  • Remain with their existing GESB Superannuation account; or
  • Join the Fire and Emergency Services Superannuation Fund (Click here for more information).

Those appointed on a fixed term contract do have choice of super, however if converted to permanent, employees will need to choose one on the two options listed above.
