Who are we looking for?

Are you an enthusiastic, resilient, flexible, and adventurous educator looking for an exciting opportunity to work in a range of schools across rural, remote, and regional Western Australia?

We are seeking applications from eligible, qualified early childhood, primary and secondary teachers available during the 2026 school year.

Short-term appointments for the 2026 school year will be made from as early as 20 November 2025.

As a member of our Flying Squad of skilled teachers, you will interact with students across diverse social, physical, and educational settings and experience work in diverse classroom settings where each appointment is different. You will also receive free accommodation, travel to and from appointments and other incentives and allowances.

During 2026, you may also be entitled to receive an additional pro-rata Attraction and Retention Incentive (ARI) payment on top of your other allowances if appointed to an ARI school for a maximum of 10 weeks.

The Department of Education Western Australia has a high demand for support across a range of early childhood and primary teaching areas as well as secondary subjects such as mathematics, science, English, humanities and technologies. There are many opportunities to work in our remote community schools and make a positive difference for students. Please visit our  Live, teach and work in WA - Department of Education website to find out more about our amazing and unique regional schools, and to get a sense of what it is like to teach and live in some of  most remote settings.

How does the teacher flying squad pool work?

The Teacher Flying Squad is a Department of Education service dedicated to our rural and remote public schools in regional WA and isolated areas to provide short term teacher relief services.

Flying Squad appointments are initially made for 5 – 10 weeks, on occasion, there may be a requirement for flying squad support for a shorter period of 1 - 4 weeks.

Our Teacher Flying Squad members receive free accommodation and travel to and from the location of any appointment. Due to the nature of the short-term accommodation provided, it is extremely unlikely that pets can travel alongside you.

Is this right for me?

Our Flying Squad teachers have success where they can quickly and readily develop positive relationships with students, have a strong curriculum knowledge, and use effective classroom management strategies.

Your approach will be flexible and adaptive, with a practical mindset; someone who can ‘think on their feet.’  You must also be willing, and able, to travel on short notice and be able to adapt quickly to living in different towns and communities, and to interact positively in communities that are different from urban settings.

Interstate teachers are also eligible to apply for the Teacher Flying Squad.

In addition to the salary and allowances you receive, you will also have travel, meals and accommodation costs covered or reimbursed. There’s no obligation to accept positions, giving you control over your placements. A dedicated team will support you with coordinating your placement, travel, and accommodation.

To be accepted for the Category 2 pool from interstate, you must hold the following:

  • TRBWA Registration (Full or Provisional). Note you may be eligible for mutual recognition but cannot apply to the Flying Squad pool until you hold TRBWA registration.
  • Screening clearance – National Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC)
  • Teaching qualification that meets the department requirements.

Prior to commencing your first Flying Squad contract you must apply and register for a Western Australian Working With Children Check (WWCC).
