Position Title: Senior Media Adviser

Classification: Level 6, Between $120,457- $132,753 Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024
Contract Type: Term of Government
Reports To: Mr Shane Love MLA, Leader of the Second Opposition Party

Role Overview

The Senior Media Adviser plays a critical role in shaping and delivering the media and communications strategy for Shane Love MLA in his capacity as the Leader of the Second Opposition Party. This role is responsible for identifying opportunities, managing risks, and driving statewide media that promotes the Leader’s and Parliamentary Party’s strategic priorities. The position requires a high level of political awareness, sound judgment, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic media advice and counsel to the Leader, Members of Parliament, and senior stakeholders.
  • Identify, develop, and manage proactive and reactive media opportunities across multiple platforms.
  • Monitor media activity and deliver timely updates, analysis, and briefings to the Leader and Chief of Staff.
  • Draft and distribute media releases, talking points, speeches, and related content aligned with portfolio areas.
  • Create and execute integrated media and communications campaigns to support key initiatives and political objectives.
  • Foster and maintain strong working relationships with media representatives, government officials, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee digital communications, including website updates and distribution of media materials.
  • Support the Leader’s parliamentary and public engagement by producing tailored content and messaging.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the Parliamentary Party’s core messages and communications strategy.
  • Track, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of media and communications activities.
  • Draft correspondence and briefings on policy, portfolio, and constituent matters as required.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in media, communications, or journalism with a proven ability to manage media relations.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex issues quickly.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the capacity to manage multiple priorities.
  • A high level of professionalism, discretion, and political judgment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small, fast-paced team.
  • Flexibility to work outside regular hours as required.
  • A sound understanding of government operations and current political issues in Western Australia.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of parliamentary processes and political communications.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field.
