About the role
The Department of Justice is looking for people with life experience, empathy and compassion.
Youth Custodial Officers play a key role in supporting positive outcomes and fostering growth for young people in detention at Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Canning Vale, Western Australia.
As a Youth Custodial Officer, you will be part of a team working alongside education, health, vocational and cultural professionals to play an important role in improving outcomes for young people in detention. The right people for this job are resilient and enjoy working with young people – you may have done this professionally, voluntarily, through your family network or from other experiences.
About you
Do you have resilience, maturity, compassion and empathy?
Be a positive role model and work with young people and their families who have often experienced significant trauma. As a Youth Custodial Officer, you will balance care and control, be empathetic and encouraging yet will still set important boundaries to maintain a safe environment.
You will implement the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (Details are included in the Youth Custodial Officer Information Booklet) into everything you do to ensure young people are safe and encouraged to lead law-abiding, productive lives in a culturally supportive way.
Eligibility requirements
What else do you need:
- Australian citizenship or permanent residency, or New Zealand citizenship
- A current unrestricted C class driver’s licence (an automatic licence is acceptable, however, no learner or probationary licences)
- Applicants must be able to successfully apply for a Working with Children Check or have a current Working with Children Check to be eligible for appointment to this position
All employees are required to undergo employment screening, which includes a National Criminal History Check and other checks that may be relevant to the position requirements.

And, during the online application submission process you will be asked to address the questions below, using your strongest and most relevant examples (250 word limit per question):
1. Provide an example of a time when you used your resilience to achieve a task in a difficult setting. What happened, how did you handle it, and what was the result?
2. Explain a situation where you had to lead a group of people. What specific skills did you apply in that scenario that would be helpful in guiding at-risk youth?

Applicants found suitable in this pool, may be considered for subsequent vacancies with the Department of Justice for the duration of the pool. This pool will be open for a period of twelve (12) months from the day after the breach of standard claim period closes.
