This position is an appointment to the personal staff of the Chief Judge pursuant to s 27A of the District Court of Western Australia Act 1969.
Appointment will be by contract of employment for a period of 12 Months with the possibility of renewal.
About the Role
A rare opportunity to work directly with the Chief Judge of the District Court of Western Australia.
In the context of working with a small team of administrative staff within the Chambers of the Chief Judge, this position requires the ability to be flexible, work collaboratively with others, perform well under pressure in a sensitive work environment.
The key responsibilities of this position are to undertake legal and general research for consideration by the Chief Judge; assist in the preparation of submissions for legislative reform; prepare papers, reports, correspondence, speeches and advice and provide high level secretariat support to a range of committees.
About Us
The District Court is an intermediate trial court, with responsibility for the most serious criminal offences including serious assaults, sexual assaults, serious fraud and commercial theft, burglary and drug offences. The District Court also determines civil claims up to $750,000 and has unlimited jurisdiction in claims for damages for personal injury. The Chief Judge is the head of jurisdiction and provides strategic direction and leadership for the court as a whole.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold a tertiary qualification in law or be in their final year of their law degree.
About You
The successful candidate will possess high level legal research, analytical interpersonal and written communication skills.
The successful applicant will be required to prepare and provide accurate and well-reasoned research, advice, and reports and other correspondence for the Chief Judge; maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgement to the integrity and standards of the Court are upheld.
When considering applying for a role at the District Court, it is important to consider the jurisdiction of the Court and the subject matter incumbents may be exposed to.
The District Court deals with serious criminal offences including, sexual assaults against children and adults, serious assaults, robbery, criminal damage, serious fraud and commercial theft, burglary and serious drug offences. In the course of their duties, incumbents will encounter evidence and other materials (including but not limited to photographs, videos, written statements and oral evidence) associated with these charges. This material may be confronting and/or disturbing for some persons. The Department of Justice offers a range of services and resources to support staff.
In its civil jurisdiction, the District Court deals with commercial and debt recovery matters involving claims up to $750,000. It has unlimited jurisdiction in claims for damages for personal injuries and deals with claims relating to historical institutional sexual abuse.
All employees are required to undergo employment screening, which includes a National Criminal History Check and other checks that may be relevant to the position requirements.
