Teachers and school administrators employed at Derby District High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.
About the Role
This teaching role specifically caters for Years 9- 10 Science, Integrated Science (General), Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs. There is a requirement to teach Year 10 Maths. The school is currently linked to a number of community- based science affiliated programs that encourage our students to think scientifically and creatively. Derby DHS is working towards a two-way approach to science, linking our Indigenous studies and On-Country curriculum with science outcomes.
This role will suit someone who is highly motivated, relationship-focused, and passionate about creating exciting, culturally responsive learning experiences to ignite a desire to learn in students.
The Ideal Teacher
The successful applicant will ideally be a dedicated and motivated educator who has the ability to provide high quality teaching and learning programs that are as diverse and varied as the needs of our students. The successful applicant should be well versed in the Western Australian (WA) Curriculum in Science. You will also need to be able to develop and deliver structured, engaging courses to students of varying ability levels. As a teacher of Science, you should feel confident in your skills and abilities to encourage student passion and appreciation for the learning area by relating student learning to real-world situations and industry. The successful applicant will ideally have the ability to use a range of effective teaching strategies to support and encourage student learning. Applicants who also have current knowledge and understanding of School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) and WA Curriculum are strongly encouraged to apply.
Our School
Derby DHS is a dynamic school with a highly motivated staff. The collaborative approach, exciting work environment and the students make it a great place to teach. Staff are passionate about improving standards in education, particularly in Aboriginal Education.
The school is currently part of the Kimberley Schools Project and seeks staff to enact a targeted teaching approach as part of their overall teaching and learning programs.
The Location and Community
Derby DHS is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian. Derby is 220 km east of Broome by road and is 2463 km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming! Derby DHS is located in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings and is currently undergoing a new building program. With an enrolment of over 640 students, it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- Meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements.
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
