The Western Australian Government is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced person to take up the role of Government Architect. The purpose of the position is to provide design leadership and strategic advice to enhance the quality of Western Australia’s built environment and ensure that good design is at the centre of all development and major projects.
The position provides expert and independent advice to the Premier and Minister for Planning on key Government projects and developments and works closely with key stakeholders.
This is a five-year fixed term, full-time position hosted by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage working across all government agencies. The Government Architect is also appointed the Chair of the State Design Review Panel, a committee of the Western Australian Planning Commission.
As Government Architect, you will:
- foster and promote an integrated approach to planning, architecture and urban design for improved built environment outcomes;
- demonstrate the value of good design and its economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits to the State and the community;
- work closely with government agencies, industry, professions, peak bodies and academia to understand and influence key design issues and trends;
- build effective relationships and collaboration among building and urban design professions, architectural schools, Government and industry to maximise good design outcomes in the built environment;
- optimise the value of best practice design review services, including the State Design Review Panel;
- advise on planning policies relating to design and the built environment, urban design and landscape frameworks.
To be successful for this position, you will have:
- a recognised degree in architecture and ability to obtain registration as an architect in Western Australia;
- extensive experience in leading complex design projects across a range of scales and typologies;
- demonstrated ability to provide high-level strategic advice and influence decision-making on design matters;
- excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills;
- a strong understanding of the planning system, policy context and relevant legislation in Western Australia;
- an acknowledged reputation for good design outcomes.
