About the role

You will have the opportunity to travel on Circuit throughout the West Kimberley and provide a range of quality client-centred legal services to the West Kimberley communities, with a particular emphasis on superior court litigation, duty lawyer, legal advice, minor assistance, and prison visiting services.
We seek an experienced solicitor with a commitment to social justice and passion for helping others to join our Broome Office.
Working in various areas of law, the solicitor at this level will be responsible for delivering a range of complex legal services, with an emphasis on criminal and family law litigation in the Children’s, Magistrates and District courts. This includes research, casework, assistance, advice and representation, duty lawyer services, community legal education and dispute resolution services. The SC Level 3/4 solicitor provides high quality services in either criminal or family law including the representation of clients at trial involving factual and legal complexity.
Service delivery in regional areas involves regular outreach to circuit courts and communities which requires overnight stays and travel by road and light aircraft.
This position is well suited to experienced solicitors and presents challenging yet rewarding opportunities for personal and professional development. A Solicitor at this level will also be developing people management skills and will be involved in the direct supervision and mentoring of paralegals, graduates and junior legal staff.
All legal practitioners in the Broome Office are encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills across different practice areas in order to assist clients in a holistic manner and to contribute to the team’s strategic goals.
About you
The ideal candidate will have significant post-admission experience, preferably in criminal and/or family law (including Protection & Care), with an interest in working with vulnerable people and holistic, trauma informed practices related to prevention, education and awareness. You can efficiently and effectively conduct trial litigation in superior court jurisdictions, and you have advanced advocacy experience including the proven ability to effectively undertake cases of factual and legal difficulty.
You will be able to work autonomously and as part of a small team in often high pressure situations that might be time sensitive or require high level communication skills to manage clients presenting with drug and alcohol issues, mental health issues or presenting as generally distressed.
Cultural competency and experience in dealing with First Nations clients will be highly regarded.
