Appointment Pool
We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant – English as Additional Language (EAL/D) for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencement within the 2024 school year.
Suitable applicants will support English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD) students through mentoring and pastoral care to ensure their participation and achievement in the school environment. Suitable applicants will also support students through interpreting and/or translating according to their specific needs and their parents or caregivers, members of the school community and teachers where there are communication difficulties. The role will require you to support students to better utilise the educational program and increase understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity in schools. You will support students with developing linguistic and cultural understandings associated with Standard Australian English.
You will assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs, including identifying and representing educational and cultural needs of EALD students by providing advice on program content relating to the student’s first culture. In addition to this you will assist in the design, implementation and recording of individual or group education plans, in consultation with teachers, parents and where appropriate other professionals.
Thornlie Primary School has a culturally and linguistically diverse school community with over forty different cultures represented across the school. Students at our school are provided with a safe and highly engaging learning environment focused on developing their academic, social, behavioural and emotional potential. The school is inclusive of all students and their families and provides support to parents / carers to engage with the school and to better understand school programs.
Located within Thornlie Primary School is the Intensive English Centre which provides an intensive English language program for Stage 1 EALD students who are new to English and who have recently arrived in Australia or are commencing Year 1 and who speak a language other than English at home. Once students have completed their program in the Intensive English Centre they transition to mainstream schooling at their local school.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- effective oral communication skills and, where appropriate, written communication skills in a school community language other than English.
- effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate and liaise with students, teachers and other professionals, parents, school community members and professional staff on the provision and development of educational programs inclusive of ESL students.
- ability to contribute to a team and provide multi-cultural direction in the development and evaluation of English language programs, language resources, and individual or group education plans reflective of diverse school communities.
- ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing culturally and linguistically inclusive educational programs.
- effective organisational skills that assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
- ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within 3 months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
