Appointment Pool

Cannington Community Education Support Centre (ESC) is seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year and up the end of Term 2, 2024. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2024.
Suitable applicants will ideally have a Can-Do attitude and assist in the implementation of specialised education programs whilst working with students with disabilities and additional learning needs. They will assist teachers in the delivery of planned education programs, including the operation of computers and digital technologies and implement individual students or small group programs or demonstrations. They will, when required, provide feedback on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals in special education.
Positions will involve working in classrooms and participating in offsite learning programs including workplace learning, community service and sporting events. We are a positive behaviour support school and applicants should be committed to working with students using this model. Knowledge of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and other communication modes is desirable as well as a good understanding of ICT (Information Communication Technology).
Suitable applicants will ideally have excellent communication skills and work collaboratively or independently as required, to improve outcomes for our students. They will perform tasks that required discretion and judgement in achieving clearly defined outcomes determined by the teacher. Suitable applicants should be able to apply techniques, skills and knowledge of relevant practices acquired through previous experience, on the job learning and have the relevant qualifications.

Suitable applicants should be committed to putting students first and assisting teachers to implement instructional skills and strategies that maximise students’ engagement in their learning. They will work in dynamic teams to support the learning of students and to develop relations with students and their parents. Lead Education Assistants will provide support and training to newly appointed applicants.
Cannington Community ESC caters for over 120 secondary aged students from Years 7 to 12. Independence, achievement and respect are our Centre’s core values. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
- Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within 3 months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
