Technical Trainee Engineering

Start a career that’s really going places.

Main Roads is not just about roads. It’s about people.

People need to get to work, home and everywhere in between and businesses rely on our roads. With a rich history dating back to 1926 and exciting future ahead, Main Roads Western Australia is the WA State Government agency responsible for managing the State's road network safely, connecting people and places.

This opportunity is a key role located in the iconic Mid-West region, a home rich in cultural history, home to some of the world’s unique wildflowers, local produce, food and agriculture. This sprawling landscape that stretches across white shores, turquoise beaches combined with its historic buildings, character pubs and remnants of more than a century of history, make the Mid-West a truly unique Australian outback destination to start your next adventure. Don’t take our word for it, see for yourself https://youtu.be/RRz1pJf1bHE

What’s on offer?

A two-year traineeship that will expose you to various aspects of civil and structural engineering. We will coach and support you through completing a Diploma of Civil and Structural Engineering course whilst providing you with a network of personal and professional development, including offering a wide range of social activities for you to experience as a valued part of the team.

What work will I be doing?

From getting out on site overseeing delivery projects to getting stuck into the nitty gritty of design drawings, no two days will be the same. You will have the opportunity to rotate across a wide range of teams exposing you to materials engineering, planning, project development, and asset management whilst learning what it takes to keep our roads safe. You will grow and learn from various subject matter experts who want to see you succeed. As part of a regional cohort of trainees just like you, you will always have a friend to share your experiences with.

What we are looking for?

This Geraldton based position commences in January 2023 and is open to a range of individuals who see the benefit from a supported program that wants to give back to the community. You may be a recent school leaver, or someone who is seeking a career change or potentially someone who may want to step outside their comfort zone and take a step into a new engineering direction. Besides your commitment to teamwork, integrity and working together we require you to have confidence in your ATAR level maths abilities. A certificate III in Engineering or related field advantageous.

How does a traineeship work?

As part of the traineeship, you will:

  • Work with us fulltime whilst you complete the two-year traineeship
  • Complete all 18 modules during designated work time
  • Attend classroom-based training in Perth twice a year, with all our other trainees across the State (we take care of the travel and accommodation)
  • Be supported every step of the way by our friendly Trainee Coordinator who is dedicated to ensuring you are developing and learning at your best.

At the end of two years once you complete your Diploma of Civil and Structural Engineering, enjoy an ongoing career with long term development opportunities at Main Roads.
