The Opportunity:
We are seeking to establish a pool of motivated Assistant Managers with experience in WA’s cultural heritage to contribute to the development and implementation of teams in the Historic Heritage Conservation and Stakeholder Engagement directorates.
Assistant Manager positions will be essential in building and developing teams that effectively support the delivery of functions under the Heritage Act 2018, Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 and/or Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021. Assistant Managers will be strong communicators with experience in one or more areas relevant to WA’s cultural heritage, and may have a further specialist skills in related fields such as architecture, anthropology, archaeology, cultural landscapes, and project management.
Successful Assistant Managers will think strategically and understand how their work contributes to the identification, appreciation and conservation of WA’s cultural heritage, and be able to communicate this to a range of stakeholders. An understanding of the role of the public sector and experience of working in regulatory environments will be of benefit.
This recruitment process will establish a pool of Assistant Managers with diverse skills around a common core of team leadership and knowledge of cultural heritage. Successful applicants may be drawn from the pool for permanent or fixed term positions on a full-time or part-time basis. Current vacancies are based in Perth, but future positions may be available in regional locations where DPLH has an office. Travel may be required in these positions. This process may be used to fill future similar permanent or fixed-term positions that may arise across the WA public sector in the next 12 months from the initial date of appointment.

To be successful in this role, you need to demonstrate:
- Knowledge and understanding of cultural heritage, including the ability to stay across current and emerging issues and trends.
- Ability to read, interpret and effectively apply legislation across multiple contexts
- Proven ability to lead and develop a team
- Knowledge and experience in developing, leading and managing complex projects
- High level communication skills across a diverse range of stakeholders demonstrating ability to establish and maintain effective relationships
- A tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) in a field relating to cultural heritage is desirable but not essential.
Sensitivity to cultural diversity will be essential in all cases. Some positions may become available that engage with Aboriginal communities and individuals on heritage issues. If you have particular knowledge and experience in these areas, please include this in your application. However not having these skills should not deter you from making an application.
