This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a Senior Solicitor to join the Department of Health’s Legal and Legislative Services Unit and to be at the forefront of the Department’s legal response to the Public Health State of Emergency in respect of COVID-19.

This is a Permanent full-time opportunity.

The Legal and Legislative Services Unit in the Department of Health are seeking applications from suitably qualified, enthusiastic and dynamic individuals for the position of Senior Solicitor.

In this role you will be responsible for managing a team of lawyers and legislative advisors, providing leadership and supervision across the team in the provision of legal advice and the development of legislation. As a Senior Solicitor, you will provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters which affect the Department of Health and the wider WA health System. This includes the provision of advice and support in relation to the Public Health State of Emergency in respect of COVID-19. You will also oversee the review and development of primary and subsidiary legislation in accordance with the Minister for Health’s legislative agenda.

You will be expected to implement strategies to ensure flexibility within your team, inspiring teamwork and encouraging personal development while dealing with underperformance promptly to ensure standards are maintained. You will be prepared for the unique challenges that arise in managing the legal issues relating to the Public Health State of Emergency for Covid-19, where the ability to respond to rapidly changing circumstances is critical to the achievement of positive outcomes for the community.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  1. Be a legal practitioner eligible to practice in WA with substantial experience in providing high level complex but practical legal advice in a time-sensitive environment;
  2. Be able to demonstrate strong leadership and management skills, with a proven track record of managing a team and resources to achieve business outcomes and a proven capacity to be flexible and adaptable;
  3. Have a demonstrated ability to build and sustain productive relationships with a diverse range of internal and extenal stakeholders;
  4. Have a proven ability to think strategically, manage risk and communicate effectively and persuasively.
