About the role
The principle of equivalence of care in prison medicine requires that the quality and standard of health care provided to prisoners is the same as that provided in the community through the public health system. The service is accredited against the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for Health Services in Australian Prisons demonstrating our commitment to providing high quality safe and effective patient care.
Working in a primary care setting, as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Prison Medical Officer functions in accordance with the Prisons Act 1981 by providing high quality general medical management in a primary health care setting, to male and female patients across the adult and juvenile custodial estates. The Prison Medical Officer also provides out of hours advice through a rostered on-call system.
The Prison Medical Officer works closely with health centre staff (nurses, receptionists and allied health) and prison staff in planning, organising and managing the provision of health care. Clinics are held in person with an alternative telehealth or video call options available dependent on site location.

Eligibility to Apply
- Applicants must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position.
- Evidence of registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is required.
About you
You will need to effectively demonstrate:
- Applying knowledge in Public Health Medicine including the management of infectious diseases and persons with blood borne viruses.
- Providing effective medical care to individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal people.
- Providing effective Primary Mental Health care to individuals with mental illness, personality disorders, mood disorders, acquired brain injury and intellectual disability, and opiate prescribing to individuals with drug related health problems
- Developing and delivering chronic disease management programs such as, but not limited to, Diabetes, Renal Disease, Respiratory Disease, Cirrhosis, Cardiac and Cardiovascular disease.
- Referring to allied and specialist services and working with external providers such as Community Health and Mental Health Services.
- Participating in multi-disciplinary teams, case conferences and care planning.
- Communicating and relating to a wide range of cultures, groups and individuals.
- Operating electronic health information systems.
- Writing referrals and reports.
- Developing and maintaining workplace relationships

Pool Recruitment
The Department of Justice uses recruitment pools to build a bank of talent for future opportunities. When part of a pool you may be offered a permanent or temporary position, however an appointment is not guaranteed.
This pool will be open for a period of 12 from the day after the breach of standard claim period closes. Fixed-term full-time / part time appointments may be offered as vacancies arise, however an appointment is not guaranteed. Extension may by possible, subject to business requirements.
