Yalgoo Primary School (PS) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic principal to join their friendly team.
The successful applicant will be responsible for understanding and leading the school community in promoting a vision for the future, underpinned by common purposes and values that will secure the commitment and alignment of stakeholders to realise the potential of all students. They will possess the capacity to establish a strong connection with the parents, carers and the local community to promote high levels of attendance, engagement and achievement. They will be committed to continuous school improvement and the development of the instructional program, particularly the pedagogy of beginning teachers, and building networks with other agencies, other schools, and services in the community to benefit school programs.
Yalgoo PS, which was established in 1897, is one of eight schools in the Murchison cluster of the Mid West Education District. It is approximately 220 kilometres from Geraldton. The closest schools are Mullewa District High School, Morawa District High School and Mount Magnet District High School.
The students are catered for in multi age groups (MAGS) classrooms. Staff use a collaborative approach to curriculum delivery and this, with the implementation of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework and the Aboriginal Literacy Strategy, to ensure student’s needs are met.
The grounds are attractive and the basketball court, covered area, playground and school oval are well used throughout the year. The new play areas of thermoplastic designs with letters and numbers are on the verandah outside Room 2, the Library and Room 4 teaching areas. The Undercover area has a snakes and ladder game together with hopscotch.
The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
We seek an individual whose attributes encompass:
- optimising the school’s financial, physical and human resources through sound management practices and organisational systems and processes that contribute to the implementation of the school’s vision and goals;
- fostering a safe, purposeful and inclusive learning environment and the capacity to develop constructive and respectful relationships with staff, students, parents and other stakeholders;
- leading and managing the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community, through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and other stakeholders;
- ensuring compliance and accountability for the overall management and development of the school within Government and Departmental policies and guidelines;
- establishing and maintaining a school culture that promotes positive relationships between students and between students and staff;
- responding positively to crises and incidents, whilst retaining a focus on the effectiveness of the educational program; and
- being innovative and creative in the establishment of systems and structures to foster academic development and improvements in social and emotional development for students.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the three leadership requirements and five professional practices particular to the role of a principal identified by the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:

- Engaging and working with the community

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
