Fixed term opportunity to 30 June 2028 with the possibility for extension and/or permanency

Interpret complex legislation and make decisions that support WA’s energy and resources future.

Would you like to be a part of the new Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration?

As a member of the department, you will help support the development of Western Australia’s resources sector, which oversees resource development and improved environmental outcomes for mining, petroleum and exploration for the benefit of WA and future generations.

Our people will be provided with a range of benefits, including flexible work arrangements, working at home, in the field or in the office, training and development opportunities, and ongoing support to enable you to achieve outcomes for our community.  We value diversity and appreciate every individual’s perspective, bringing together a diverse and inclusive workforce to drive innovation and success.

The role

As the Senior Tenure Officer, you will form part of a dynamic team within the Resource Tenure Division, responsible for administering the granting of tenure for resource exploration and production, and facilitating access to land for resource activities. You will be pivotal in coordinating and refining the periodic petroleum, geothermal energy and greenhouse gas Acreage Release programs. Additionally, you will assess and process complex applications for petroleum, geothermal energy and greenhouse gas titles, provide authoritative advice on tenure matters under relevant legislation, and support the training and development of the team’s Tenure Officers.

Drawing on your demonstrated experience working with complex legislation, you will play a vital role in interpreting and applying legislative requirements to ensure consistent and compliant decision-making under the Petroleum, Geothermal Energy and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 1967, Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas (Submerged Lands) Act 1982, Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Pipelines Act 1969 and associated legislation. You will support regulatory integrity by assessing applications, transfers and dealings against legislative requirements, and preparing well‑reasoned recommendations to inform decisions by senior stakeholders and delegates.

Your strong skills and experience in legislative interpretation, regulatory administration, and stakeholder engagement within the resources or government sector will be key to your success in this role, particularly your ability to apply legislative frameworks to complex or ambiguous scenarios and translate them into clear, practical outcomes.

You will bring to the team your expertise in petroleum, geothermal energy and greenhouse gas tenure processes, along with your ability to critically analyse, interpret and apply legislation, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality written advice and documentation. Your commitment to accuracy and consistency will support effective decision-making, while your client-focused approach will ensure responsive, professional engagement with industry, government and the community.
