The Role

Join our team as a Special Needs Education Assistant and support the Department’s commitment to high-quality teaching and learning for students with diverse needs. In this role, you will assist in the implementation of specialised education programs and support students across a wide range of year levels and curriculum areas, ensuring every student gets the opportunity to achieve their best.

Working closely with teachers, you will support the delivery of planned educational programs using explicit teaching and evidence-based instructional practices aligned with whole-school approaches to improving literacy and numeracy outcomes. You would contribute to the implementation of individual and small group programs such as Letters & Sounds, Heggerty, Word Origins, Talk for Reading and Talk for Writing, while providing feedback that supports the ongoing monitoring and refinement of these programs. While not essential, knowledge of evidence-based intervention programs such as MiniLit and MacqLit would be welcomed. 

Strong behaviour support skills would be highly regarded. You would focus on building genuine, positive relationships with students and support the implementation of the school’s Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework. Your practice should be underpinned by trauma-informed approaches and cultural awareness, helping to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

  • 1. Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • 2. Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • 3. Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • 5. Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • 6. Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
